@wyatt ah, admittedly, about as long as i've been using web browsers, i've been using the fancy ones
opera -> chrome -> firefox

opera was so. damn. good. before it became shovelware, so feature rich and like, echos of its legacy live into today
still kinda miss stuff like mouse gestures...

re: the discord situation, possible alternatives from a nerd's standpoint @ww it's not an easy problem for sure.. feels like a lot of devs see a small problem and are either blocked from fixing it themselves or just attempt to build their own solution, there's a lot of dead software in the chat space... i guess i'm just tired of seeing flash in the pan software over and over again :/

genuinely hadn't heard that xmpp had a reputation, what's that about?

sort of.... a vocalization extension sorta like the tilde in japanese (i.e. うぐうう〜)
or at least, that's how i've theorized it, and nobody's argued :3

can also be used to show emotion, like... sorta fuzzy brain mode (i.e. creatures,,,,,)
sometimes also seen used on its own

in any case, i love it and adopted it quite quickly after seeing it :33

the discord situation, possible alternatives from a nerd's standpoint @aurelia honestly, what i think we need is a shiny xmpp client
xmpp is so, so good as a backbone, federation, chat, voice, file sharing
it just needs a pretty face, one that'll hide away the omemo breakage, the overly technical stuff, the ugly parts of xmpp really

google talk was that, a long time ago, as i understand....

i've heard little tidbits about revolt/stoat... feels like it's going to be a flash in the pan thing, like so many others that attempted to clone 100% of discord's feature set (i've heard it can be selfhosted? does it federate with other revolt/stoat servers?)

it's just so, so many features to attempt to maintain all at once, i think folks have forgotten that discord didn't have all that to begin with...

xmpp is still lovely, threema exists (and is good! just can't get anyone over the paywall..)
mumble is super high quality

heck, signal (even if their business model has problems if you ask me)
plenty of options out there, that exist, are mature, and quite good :3

@zaire fair, i agree matrix is painful sometimes
i do reliably use it to communicate as... basically my sole platform for a few folks though (do fedi dms count? they're kinda painful in some regards too...)

maybe it's cause i host my own server? iunno, but it works good for me and i'll keep sharing it :3
