my silhouette cutter is kinda a similar story, thrift store find (~$50), just needed a power supply..
software side sounds like it was a bit easier, cause i want to say that it supports either a superset or subset of hpgl.. gpgl, i think(?), so it was just an inkscape plugin and cutting was happening :3
