@celestia reads like a display sync issue, tho usually monitors will display an error before going this far...
if you move the cursor around does the display change at all, or is it hanging here?

i want to say that the debian installer has fallback graphics modes, till you can get some proprietary firmware blobs going (want to say amdgpu uses some, but can't quite recall)...
