@Starcross i don't do these exact things, but a coping mechanism is anything used to deal with something difficult
i suppose that's to say the definition of cope is actually quite broad and these days we just misuse it in a negative light... while the actual definition is 'to deal with and attempt to overcome problems and difficulties'

we've all got our coping mechanisms, some effective, others not... everyone being different, some might work for a group and others won't

but as for simply existing and how it might help healing, it may come down to being in a state of mind where the difficult thoughts can be given time to process down, even if subconsciously
iunno, i suppose set and setting is important.. i, for example, deal with difficult thoughts much better at home than say, work.. but mine are relatively mild all things considered and others may desire a more comfortable environment to deal with theirs in
