@theking it is technically more secure, i think card skimming is still technically viable in the states?
like, the while pump uses the secure elements to do the transaction, a skimmer could grab the magstripe while that happens

nfc payments basically do the same thing as the chip, just wirelessly
subverts the skimming possibility

of course, skimming is an attack i've really only heard of in theory, never actually heard about it being executed..
